The single-number system is more efficient and cost effective than the previous system while offering the public a single memorable number to contact for all policing non-emergency issues.

The new system should reduce inappropriate 999 use as all non-urgent calls will be handled through the single number. Also the number prefix means all calls, including those made outside the county, are charged at local rate.

There are no changes to the existing call handling service. The only thing that has changed is the number. However, the new integreated communication Control System (ICCS) means call handlers can pinpoint the area the caller is ringing from.
